Matthieu's Birthday Party!!

A while back, while Steph was eating lunch at work, he saw a familiar face - Matthieu! As it turns out, Matthieu was one of Steph's colleagues from his university and now they work for the same company, Matthieu in Zurich and Steph in France. Matthieu is in India on a 6 week business trip and was lucky enough to get to celebrate his birthday in this wonderful country, so of course that deserved a party!! And, to top it all off, France was playing that night at (gasp!) midnight Indian Standard Time, so we incorporated that into the soiree! We had some good food in good company and Matthieu seemed to enjoy his evening!

Il y a quelque temps, lorsque Steph est allé déjeuner à la cafétéria de son boulot, il a reconnu un visage familier : Matthieu ! Matthieu était dans la même école d'ingénieur que Steph et il s'avère qu'ils travaillent dans la même compagnie, Matthieu à Zurich et Steph à Sophia-Antipolis. Matthieu est en Inde pour un projet de 6 semaines et il a eu la chance de fêter son anniversaire dans ce magnifique pays, donc bien sûr, ça méritait bien une fête !! Et, par chance (ou pas), la France jouait ce soir-là à minuit (heure indienne), donc on a fait d'une pierre deux coup et on a donc regardé le match après la fête. On a eu le droit a un bon petit repas, en bonne compagnie et Matthieu avait l'air d'apprécier sa soirée !

Fake 6 Month Party!

We arrived in India on the 9th of January 2010 and as June is the 6th month of the year, Jenny had a thought in her head that on June 9th we would be celebrating our halfway mark in India. Silly girl! So, she organized a party, invited everyone she knew and planned out a killer menu to feed all the hungry guests. It wasn't until about 5 or 6 days before the party that Steph, very kindly, told Jenny that we hadn't yet reached the 6 month mark! "Of course we have!" argued Jenny, and proceeded to count out the months on her fingers to show Steph how wrong he was. Only to discover that SHE was the one who was mistaken! We went ahead with the party and just changed the theme: it was now our 5 month party and we were celebrating the fact that we still have 7 more months in !ncredible !ndia!!

The party was great and everyone seemed to have a good time. We watched the world cup matches as well, but Jenny didn't let that get in the way of her desire for dancing and in between the matches everyone got their groove on, that's for sure! The last partygoers headed off the bed at 4:30 am and there were more than a couple people who were feeling no pain by the end of the night - all the signs of a good party!! We are now expected to throw this same kind of party for our REAL 6 month anniversary, but also the 7th, 8th, 9th months and so on! Here's hoping we can make it happen as we all had an amazing time!!

On est arrive en Inde le 9 janvier 2010 et comme Juin est le 6e mois de l'annee, la premiere pensee de Jenny fut de celebrer notre mi-parcours en Inde le 1er week-end suivant le 9 du mois. Avant meme de realiser son erreur de calcul, elle a donc organise la fete, invite tout le monde qu'elle connaissait et a planifie un super menu pour nourrir tous ces estomacs. Ce n'est pas avant 5 ou 6 jours apres que Steph, tre gentiment, lui a fait remarque qu'on avait pas encore atteint les 6 mois en Inde ! "Bien sur que si !" a-t-elle lance en comptant les mois sur ses doigts pour lui prouver qu'il avait tord... en se rendant seulement a la fin du compte qu'elle avait tord. On a quand meme fait la fete mais en changeant legerement le theme : c'etait maintenant devenu notre fete de 5 mois et on celebrait le fait qu'on avait encore 7 mois a vivre dans l'incroyable !ndia !!

La fete etait super est tout le monde semblait s'etre bien amusé. On a regarde les matchs de la Coupe du Monde aussi, mais Jenny a insiste pour que les gens dansent entre les matchs, ce qui bien sur, s'est realisé ! Les derniers fetards sont alles se coucher a 4h30 du matin et il y avait plus d'une personne qui ont fini la soiree plutot joyeux - signes d'une bonne fete ! Nos invites s'attendent maintenant a notre reelle fete du 6e mois en Inde, mais aussi celle du 7e, 8e, 9e mois jusqu'au dernier ! En esperant qu'on pourra etre au niveau, vu qu'on s'est tous bien amusé !!

Dream Connect English Party / Fête à Dream Connect

Since the beginning of April Jenny has been the "Head Facilitator" of the Dream Connect English program. The NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) that Jenny is volunteering with, called Dream a Dream, started a program called Dream Connect which was launched in order to try and hold on to the students that have already gone through a Dream a Dream program in their school. The way high school works in India is this: the kids do three years of 'normal' high school, up to their 10th Standrad, then they must apply to get into what they call 'college' which is essentially the last 2 years of high school. The Dream a Dream programs works with the children, in their school, only up until 10th standard and many people had started to worry about losing contact with these kids after they left for college. There is a very high dropout rate after 10th standard as these kids come from families that are not so well off and the parents need them to work as every income in the family counts. And the Dream Connect program is born! The idea is to keep the kids involved with Dream a Dream in the summer between their 10th standard and their entry into college and to keep their interest in school. Also, to try and work with their parents and show them that schooling is indeed very important and even if these kids can make a small income as dropouts, they can potentially go so much further if they only stay in school. Not an easy task!!

The program consists of an English course, a Learn IT course, public speaking and, soon to be added, a Math and Money Management course. Jenny's job was to deliver - in a fun and creative way! - the English curriculum 3 times a week, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. She had a great time with the kids everday, and they taught her just as much - if not more!! - than she taught them. Their motivation and energy was incredibly inspiring and what a bright bunch of kids they are! Unfortunately, once the kids had to go back to college, the English classes were moved to the weekends and since we are on the move so often on the weekends, Jenny had to give up the classes. But she will never give up the memories! Jenny and her British colleague Michael threw a good-bye party with the kids and we had a great time!! We played games, went to the park, had some food and said good-bye to everyone, but with the promise of coming back every once in a while to visit! Depuis début Avril, Jenny est "Head Facilitator" du programme d'Anglais "Dream Connect". L'ONG (Organisation Non-Gouvernementale) dans laquelle Jenny est bénévole, dont le nom est Dream a Dream, a démarré un programme, Dream Connect, dont le but est d'essayer de garder pendant les vacances scolaires les enfants qui ont déjà participer à un programme de Dream a Dream dans leur école. En Inde, le cycle scolaire secondaire fonctionne comme cela : les enfants font trois ans de 'high school' (collège) jusqu'au 10e standard (2nde), puis ils doivent ensuite s'inscrire pour leur 'college' qui correspondent à nos deux dernières années de lycée. Le programme de Dream a Dream a lieu avec les enfants, dans leur école, jusqu'au 10e standard uniquement et le soucis de l'ONG est de ne pas savoir ce que deviennent les enfants quand ils partent au 'college'. Il y a énormément d'abandon après le 10e standard étant donné que ces enfants proviennent de familles assez pauvres et que les parents ont besoin d'eux pour travailler et ramener de l'argent pour la famille. C'est pour cette raison que Dream Connect est né ! L'idée est de garder les enfants au sein de Dream a Dream pendant l'été, entre leur 10e standard et leur entrée au 'college' afin de les convaincre de continuer leur cursus scolaire. Ils ont aussi à coeur d'essayer de discuter avec leurs parents pour leur expliquer que l'éducation de leurs enfants est très importante et plutôt que de ramener un petit peu d'argent en abandonnant leur scolarité, ils peuvent potentiellement aller nettement plus loin dans leur vie en restant à l'école. Pas une tâche facile !!

Le programme propose un cours d'Anglais, d'Informatique, de conversation en public et, bientôt, de Mathématiques et d'Économie. Le travail de Jenny était de donner - dans une atmosphère fun et créative - le cours d'Anglais 3 fois par semaine, les lundis, mardis et mercredis. Elle a passé de super moments tous les jours avec les enfants et elle a appris autant d'eux - si ce n'est plus - qu'ils ont appris d'elle. Leur motivation et énergie était réellement encourageante et qu'est-ce qu'ils sont intelligents ! Malheureusement, lorsque les enfants ont du rentré au 'college', les cours d'Anglais on été déplacé pendant les week-ends et étant donné qu'on est souvent en vadrouille les week-ends, Jenny a du abandonné l'enseignement de ces cours. Mais elle n'oubliera jamais cette incroyable expérience ! Jenny et son collègue anglais Michael ont organisé une fête de départ avec ces enfants et ils ont tous passé un super moment !! Ils ont fait des jeux, sont partis dans un parc, ont mangé ensemble et ont finalement dit au-revoir à chacun, en se promettant de retourner les voir de temps en temps ! HAL Market Time!

For the longest time now we have been talking about checking out the Bangalore HAL Market, which happens every Saturday morning and sells wonderful fruits and vegetables with a few stalls making up a small but fully stocked fish market. We were thrilled with the market and were so glad that we took the time to go! The people were so friendly, the fruits and vegetables the freshest possible and in the fish section we saw so many interesting things! We got loads of great pictures so check them out the share in this wonderful market experience!

Cela fait bien longtemps que l'on parlait d'aller au marché HAL, à Bangalore, qui a lieu tous les samedis matins. On y trouve des superbes fruits et legumes et quelques stands formant un petit mais riche marché aux poissons. On etait ravi de notre petit tour au marché, ca vallait le detour ! Les gens etaient adorables, les produits aussi frais que possible et dans la partie poissons, on a vu plein de choses intéressantes. On a pris quelques photos pour vous faire ressentir l'atmosphere de ce merveilleux marché !
