Matthieu's Birthday Party!!

A while back, while Steph was eating lunch at work, he saw a familiar face - Matthieu! As it turns out, Matthieu was one of Steph's colleagues from his university and now they work for the same company, Matthieu in Zurich and Steph in France. Matthieu is in India on a 6 week business trip and was lucky enough to get to celebrate his birthday in this wonderful country, so of course that deserved a party!! And, to top it all off, France was playing that night at (gasp!) midnight Indian Standard Time, so we incorporated that into the soiree! We had some good food in good company and Matthieu seemed to enjoy his evening!

Il y a quelque temps, lorsque Steph est allé déjeuner à la cafétéria de son boulot, il a reconnu un visage familier : Matthieu ! Matthieu était dans la même école d'ingénieur que Steph et il s'avère qu'ils travaillent dans la même compagnie, Matthieu à Zurich et Steph à Sophia-Antipolis. Matthieu est en Inde pour un projet de 6 semaines et il a eu la chance de fêter son anniversaire dans ce magnifique pays, donc bien sûr, ça méritait bien une fête !! Et, par chance (ou pas), la France jouait ce soir-là à minuit (heure indienne), donc on a fait d'une pierre deux coup et on a donc regardé le match après la fête. On a eu le droit a un bon petit repas, en bonne compagnie et Matthieu avait l'air d'apprécier sa soirée !

Fake 6 Month Party!

We arrived in India on the 9th of January 2010 and as June is the 6th month of the year, Jenny had a thought in her head that on June 9th we would be celebrating our halfway mark in India. Silly girl! So, she organized a party, invited everyone she knew and planned out a killer menu to feed all the hungry guests. It wasn't until about 5 or 6 days before the party that Steph, very kindly, told Jenny that we hadn't yet reached the 6 month mark! "Of course we have!" argued Jenny, and proceeded to count out the months on her fingers to show Steph how wrong he was. Only to discover that SHE was the one who was mistaken! We went ahead with the party and just changed the theme: it was now our 5 month party and we were celebrating the fact that we still have 7 more months in !ncredible !ndia!!

The party was great and everyone seemed to have a good time. We watched the world cup matches as well, but Jenny didn't let that get in the way of her desire for dancing and in between the matches everyone got their groove on, that's for sure! The last partygoers headed off the bed at 4:30 am and there were more than a couple people who were feeling no pain by the end of the night - all the signs of a good party!! We are now expected to throw this same kind of party for our REAL 6 month anniversary, but also the 7th, 8th, 9th months and so on! Here's hoping we can make it happen as we all had an amazing time!!

On est arrive en Inde le 9 janvier 2010 et comme Juin est le 6e mois de l'annee, la premiere pensee de Jenny fut de celebrer notre mi-parcours en Inde le 1er week-end suivant le 9 du mois. Avant meme de realiser son erreur de calcul, elle a donc organise la fete, invite tout le monde qu'elle connaissait et a planifie un super menu pour nourrir tous ces estomacs. Ce n'est pas avant 5 ou 6 jours apres que Steph, tre gentiment, lui a fait remarque qu'on avait pas encore atteint les 6 mois en Inde ! "Bien sur que si !" a-t-elle lance en comptant les mois sur ses doigts pour lui prouver qu'il avait tord... en se rendant seulement a la fin du compte qu'elle avait tord. On a quand meme fait la fete mais en changeant legerement le theme : c'etait maintenant devenu notre fete de 5 mois et on celebrait le fait qu'on avait encore 7 mois a vivre dans l'incroyable !ndia !!

La fete etait super est tout le monde semblait s'etre bien amusé. On a regarde les matchs de la Coupe du Monde aussi, mais Jenny a insiste pour que les gens dansent entre les matchs, ce qui bien sur, s'est realisé ! Les derniers fetards sont alles se coucher a 4h30 du matin et il y avait plus d'une personne qui ont fini la soiree plutot joyeux - signes d'une bonne fete ! Nos invites s'attendent maintenant a notre reelle fete du 6e mois en Inde, mais aussi celle du 7e, 8e, 9e mois jusqu'au dernier ! En esperant qu'on pourra etre au niveau, vu qu'on s'est tous bien amusé !!

Housewarming Party / Crémaillère

After a long wait and just a tiny bit of stress, we had our housewarming party. It was a fabulous evening filled with good friends, good food and good fun. There was also some music and dancing on the menu and, believe it or not, Steph even danced and we have the videos to prove it!

We had about 20 people over and Jenny decided that it was too much to have a sit-down dinner so the menu consisted of party finger-foods : samosas, pani puri, veggies and dip, some rice salad and other snacks. People seemed to enjoy the food, except the raw veggies which appartenly people do not eat here. But the important thing is that we're sharing new experiences, right? For us as well as everyone else! Steph's colleagues were nice enough to present the both of us with some very nice gifts; our very own Indian clothing! As you can see in the pictures, we didn't waste any time in trying them on! A fair amount of alcohol was consumed as well, and we had a few people who were hurting by the end of the party, definately not going to mention any names! Everyone seemed to have a good time and we sure enjoyed ourselves with our first, and hopefully not last, big party at our place!

We also made a very important purchase today, our very own Carrom board! We already have one in France and decided that we needed one here as well. We have already played many times and we're looking forward to having many carrom evenings with friends! For those of you who know this game, you know how fun it is!

Après une longue attente et un petit peu de stress, on a finalement fait notre "pendaison de crémaillère" hier soir (toutes les raisons sont bonnes pour faire la fête...). C'était une superbe soirée célébrée avec des bons amis, de la bonne nourriture et a lot of fun ! Il y avait aussi de la musique (indienne), de la danse et, croyez le si vous le voulez, même Steph a dansé... et on a des vidéos pour le prouver !

Il y avait environ 20 personnes et Jenny a décidé, vu le nombre de participants, de proposer un buffet : samosas, pani puri, legumes crus + sauce, salade de riz et autres finger foods. La nourriture a eu un beau succès dans l'ensemble, à part les légumes crus que les gens n'ont visiblement pas l'habitude de manger ici. Mais ce qui est important, c'est qu'on essaie de partager des nouvelles expériences, non ? Pour nous, mais aussi pour les autres ! Les collègues de Steph ont été très sympa et nous ont offert nos propres vêtements indien. Comme vous pouvez le voir sur les photos, ont a pas perdu de temps pour les essayer ! Une bonne quantité d'alcool a été également consommée, et il y a eu quelques personnes pas clair à la fin de la soirée, on ne donnera pas de noms ! Tout le monde semblait avoir passé une bonne soirée, nous les premiers...

On a aussi fait un achat important aujourd'hui : notre propre table de Carrom. On en a déjà une en France mais on a pensé qu'on en avait besoin ici aussi. On a déjà fait quelques parties et espérons avoir plusieurs soirées Carrom à l'avenir entre amis. Pour ceux qui connaissent, vous savez à quel point c'est sympa comme jeu !

Letdown day / Journee decevante

Well hello to all our faithful readers, a few things to fill you in on. Jenny ate meat for the first time since her arrival in India yesterday. Not that she missed it, which she didn't, just that she wanted to taste Steph's choice of dish. It was confirmed, she still doesn't miss meat!

Second update: we had a kind of negative experience with our apartment hunting. We went out a few times with some real estate agents who work with Steph's company and they showed us about 5 or 6 apartments - all of which were gorgeous. We finally chose one on Wednesday, which was the best one on an all round scale - with all the amenities that we wanted, in the type of neighbourhood that we wanted and the apartment was perfect for us. Or so we thought. We were informed this afternoon that it was way over budget. These agents were supposed to be showing us things that were in the company's predetermined budget and they (purposefully?) showed us things that were well above that! So we have to start all over again! It was, without exaggertaing, an enormous letdown! So tomorrow is take 2 of our apartment search, though seeing the ones we cannot afford before the ones we can afford may turn out to be a tough experience. Sigh...

Third update: we also spent a large portion of our day at the Foreigner's Registration Office, which was also a kind of negative experience, though in the end we finally ended up getting what we needed. We arrived with hopes of making our visit as short as possible and ended up staying over 3 hours. Double sigh. Jenny has always complained about French administration and now she will have to shut up - she has found something worse. Or at least on the same level.

So to sum things up a bit, today was - for the most part - a big letdown. But we both are trying to pick up our spirits and not let this get in the way of having the best year of our lives. We'll just have to chalk it up to a rocky start, which would have been expected almost anywhere. So tomorrow we are hoping for a bit of a fresh start, with these experiences under our belt, we now know what to ask and for what we need to be on the lookout. Bonjour a tous nos lecteurs assidus ; voici quelques infos de notre part. Jenny a mange de la viande pour la premiere fois depuis qu'on est arrive en Inde. Non pas par manque, ce qui est faux, mais juste parce qu'elle voulait gouter le plat de Steph. C'est confirme, la viande ne lui manque toujours pas.

Deuxieme info : on a pas de superbes nouvelles concernant l'appartement. On est alle visiter 5 ou 6 logements avec des agents immobiliers (approuves par la societe de Steph), et tous etaient superbes. On a finalement donne notre choix mercredi : le meilleur appartement concernant tous nos criteres, avec tous les services qu'on recherchait, dans le type de quartier qu'on voulait et l'appartement lui-meme etait parfait pour nous deux. A notre grand desespoir, on a ete informe cet apres-midi que c'etait largement au dessus du budget accorde par la compagnie de Steph. Ces personnes etaient censees nous montrer uniquement des logements dans un budget pre-determine par la societe  mais ils nous ont (intentionnellement ?) montres des appart largement dont les prix etaient largement superieur a celui-ci. Donc, on recommence tout depuis le depart. C'etait, sans exagerer, une enorme deception ! Donc, demain, c'est le 2e round pour la recherche d'appart', meme si visiter des appart' dans notre budget apres avoir visiter des logements hors budget risque d'etre une experience difficile. (soupir)...

Troisieme info : On a egalement passe une bonne partie de la journee au FRO (Office d'enregistrement pour les etrangers), ce qui a egalement ete une experience un peu negative, quoiqu'au final on a eu ce dont on avait besoin. On est arrive dans l'espoir de repartir aussi vite que possible, et on est finalement reste la-bas pendant 3 heures ! (re-soupir)... Jenny s'est toujours plainte de l'administration francaise, mais dorenavant elle pourra se taire sur ce sujet - elle a trouve pire ici... ou du moins, du meme niveau.

Donc pour conclure en deux mots, aujourd'hui etait une journee en grande partie decevante. Mais on essaie tous les deux de ne pas se laisser abattre en faisant en sorte de ne pas laisser cette experience entacher une des plus belle annees de notre vie. On se dit qu'on peut s'attendre a ce genre d'experiences quelque soit le pays. Donc demain, on espere redemarrer les visites sur un bon pied car on sait maintenant a quoi s'attendre au niveau des appart'. Our first week in India is coming to an end, and what an eventful week it was! We had loads of delicious food, we saw so many different things and are just having a blast. As we mentioned before, yesterday was a holiday here, a kind of new year's celebration, but what we did not know was that today was a solar eclipse! The belief here is that it is bad - especially for children and pregnant women - to be outside during an eclipse. Sounds reasonable enough. So Steph had taken the day off so we could really start out apartment search, get registered at the Foreign Registry Office and start the long and arduous process of opening a bank account. None of those things got done! We did not have the required papers needed at the registry office. We never made it to the bank which closes at 2pm everyday (after opening at 10am - ha ha) and since today was an eclipse everything was closed from 11 to 4pm, for fear of the sun! So we managed to do 0 out of 3 things on our list of things to do today. We did end up having a wonderful meal (as every other day) and a nap, but those definately were NOT on our list! And, as we were coming back from lunch, a man noticed our curiosity and offered us a look at the solar eclipse through a special film paper ; we saw the mostly covered sun, it was fabulous.

Steph managed to get his hair cut for Rs. 40 (for info, the exchange rate today is Rs. 66 for 1 euro or Rs. 45 for CAD 1).

So apartment hunting has been postponed until tomorrow, so we'll update everyone on how that went in the next post! Hope everyone is keeping well.

On arrive a la fin de notre 1ere semaine a Bangalore... quelle semaine riche en evenements ! On a mange des choses delicieuses, on a vu tout pleins de choses differentes, on s'amuse bien. Comme on l'a evoque dans notre dernier post, hier etait un jour ferie ici, une sorte de jour de l'An, mais ce que l'on ne savait pas, c'est qu'oujourd'hui il y avait une eclipse solaire. Ici, la croyance dit qu'il est tres mauvais d'etre a l'exterieur pendant une eclipse, surtout pour les femmes enceintes et les enfants. Pourquoi pas... Or, Steph avait pris un jour de conge aujourd'hui pour commencer les recherches pour l'appartement, s'enregistrer aupres des autorites nationales (FRO), et commencer la lourde procedure d'ouverture d'un compte en banque. Aucune de ses choses n'ont ete realisees ! On n'avait pas les bons papiers au FRO. On n'a pu etre a l'heure a la banque, qui ferme a 14h (l'ouverture etant a 10h). Et comme aujourd'hui il y avait l'eclipse, tous les magasins ont fermes entre 11h et 16h, par peur du soleil. Du coup, on s'est paye un bon petit resto (comme tous les jours d'ailleurs) suivie d'une bonne sieste... mais ca, c'etait pas sur notre ToDo liste. Et sur le chemin du retour, un passant nous a prete une sorte de papier photo a travers lequel on a pu clairement pu distinguer le Soleil largement recouvert pas la Lune, magnifique ! Aussi, Steph s'est fait coupe les cheveux pour 40 Roupies (Pour info, le cours du roupie aujourd'hui est de 66 roupies pour 1 euro).

Finalement, la recherche d'appart est reportee a demain. On vous tiendra au courant dans notre prochain post.
