Trip #2: Goa

19/02/2010 - 24/02/2010 (map/plan)

Goa was everything we thought and hoped it would be - and sometimes even more! We have already decided that we are going back sometime soon, leave on a Friday night and get back on a Monday morning, and just have a nice, romantic weekend when we need to get away! So here''s how the weekend went...

Trip: Bangalore - Panjim(Panaji)

We left Bangalore at 7:30 pm to take our loooooong trip on a Volvo Semi-Sleeper Bus. We had no idea what to expect except that we knew there would be air conditioning. The bus seats actually leaned back quite a bit more than airplane seats, so we thought we would be in for a relaxing trip where we would sleep the whole way, no problem. The bus started moving and we realized how wrong we were! With the roads the way they are and the driving the way it is, sleep was next to impossible! Every corner felt as though we were falling out of our seat and the horn! The horn! Every 30 seconds or so the driver had to blow the horn! Which could be hear nice and clear all the way through the bus. It was supposed to be a 12 hour trip with a few stops as the buses have no bathroom, but it ended up being a 14 hours trip with 2 stops - good luck for those with small bladders! We finally made it to our final destination a bit worse for the wear, but ready to enjoy our trip!

With a bit of a delay in our arrival, we had less time than we thought, but enough time to take in the city. We found a nice hotel in the Fontainhas area that was fairly central and near the river. Jenny had read that the city offered many types of cruises on the Mandovi River, some of which included dolphin watching, one hour cruises and even a dinner cruise. We opted for the dinner cruise, more on that later. We took a taxi to Old Goa which was quite interesting with its architecture and many churches, a nice little trip. Then it was back to the main city for some rest and to get ready for our boat cruise. On the way back we took a taxi with a wonderful driver named Alex who knew so much about the city and and pretty much anything else we wanted to know! He was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and he offered to drive us wherever we wanted to go on day 2. We decided we'd go with him on a little tour to see a couple different beaches, so we set up a time to meet the next day. He dropped us off at our hotel and Jenny's aunt decided to have a rest while Steph and Jenny explored the city a bit. Then it was time for our dinner cruise. We were told to show up at 8pm as the cruise was to leave at 8:30 and we were the first ones in line. That didn't last for long! As soon as the boat showed up people started pushing and trying to get right to the front, even though they weren't letting anyone on! We put a stop to that in our western way with feet against the wall and scathing comments made to anyone who tried to pass us. Oh those foreigners. When we finally made it on the boat they told us to have a seat and they would serve snacks while a small show was put on. What a joke that was! The dancers looked as though they would rather be eating worms than dancing and the snack was some peanuts and potato chips on a paper plate! We were quite amused, if not the tiniest bit disappointed. Then the real fun began - dancing! Steph decided to try and reserve some seats on the bottom of the boat where the buffet was while Jenny and her aunt danced and danced and danced! Jenny, being quite adept at copying, created a bit of a stir and even had her own little group of fans who asked her where she learnt all these Indian dance moves. People even came over to shake her hand! Needless to say she loved the star treatment! We then headed downstairs for a less than mediocre dinner then it was back to the hotel to rest up for the next day!

Day 2 - Beach Tour

Our tour started with a visit to Fort Aguada, a beautifuly preserved place with a great view of the Arabian Sea. Alex took us in to the fort and told us a bit of history, showed us the fancy Goan Jail and then we discovered how cashews grow! A question that we had never even asked ourselves, which is quite funny. They grow on a tree and they actually come out of a fruit. The goans use the juice of this fruit to make their famous alcohol, Feni (Fenny). We then visited Baga Beach, Calangute Beach and decided to spend the night in Candolim Beach. Most of these beaches were filled with toursits - Indian as well as foreign - and had a kind of "Las Vegas" feel to them. We had expected as much. Once we had decided on a hotel - a 5 minute walk to the beach - we dove in immediately! What a refreshing experience that was. Jenny and Steph then decided to speed around the ocean on a jet ski! We diligently negociated a good price (1400 INR/$30 for 20 minutes) and had a blast driving that around! We had dinner in a FABULOUS restaurant called Nisha Restaurant in Baga Beach, and Jenny finally got to have her long awaited lobster. All of their seafood was delicious - fresh from the sea and grilled to perfection with a hint of garlic butter. Accompanied with a nice glass of white it was (in Jenny's opinion anyway) one of the best dinners ever. Needless to say we were ready for bed after that!

Day 3 - Panjim - Ponda - Benaulim

This day started off with a slight disaster. We had read about a spice farm that we wanted to visit - Tropical Spice Plantation - which offered a guided tour of the plantation and a buffet lunch offering traditional Goan cuisine for the low price of 400 INR ($9). So we hopped on a bus to get to Ponda and a guide, who seemd to work for the spice plantation, told us to hop off and get onto another bus that went "directly" to the spice farm. He was going there as well so we said why not? and followed him. He kept telling us "next stop, next stop, 5 minutes, 5 minutes" and then would laugh hilariously with the bus driver and the bus ticket guy. We started to feel more and more lost and like we were being taken for a ride, literally. Jenny's aunt starting talking to a lady on the bus who said we were going in the wrong direction and the plantation was the other way and blah blah blah, we seemed to be on the wrong track! The bus then stopped in the middle of a tiiiiiiiiny village and most of the people got off to have a break while the bus driver had his lunch or a tea or something in some small cafe. We just kept waiting and waiting and waiting! Finally everyone came back on and the 'guide' said - yes again - "next stop, 5 minutes" and when we finally did stop, it was in the middle of nowhere!! By this point, we were not willing to get off the bus (with our luggage and all) and walk who knows how long to get to this place! So we just ended up going in a full circle back to Ponda to get a taxi to the plantation. A waste of a whole morning! But at least we got to see some of the countryside, right? ; ) As it turned out, it was just a 5 - 10 minute walk from where the guide wanted us to walk with him, but we had no way of knowing that before hand and were a little skeptical of doing that in the middle of nowhere! Once we got to the plantation, it was incredible. We saw things we never even dreamed of including how pepper grows, mango trees, papaya trees, cardamom and many more. The lunch was pretty good and we left feeling quite content that we actually made it after the long ordeal of the morning. It was worth it! We then headed down to Benaulim Beach to do some well deserved relaxing on the beach. Our hotel this time was right on the beach and we had another fantastic dinner, also right on the beach! This dinner actually included a whole bottle of white and let us tell you, we had no trouble finishing that off! Our conclusion was that north Goa is great if you are looking for a kind of party feel, bars and clubs and all that but south Goa is the place to go to unwind, relax on the beach and just chill.

Day 4 - Back to Panjim and Bangalore

We took a taxi back to Panjim after a relaxing morning which included pineaplle crepes and tea on the beach, with swimming before and after breakfast of course! We did a bit more shopping in Panjim then headed to the bus station to catch our bus home. Another long and tiring bus ride, 2 hours late again! Then we were back in Bangalore. Another conclusion we made was that next time we would take the train!!! All in all it was a fantastic trip and we had a great time. Stay tuned for our next trip!!

Voyage aller : Bangalore - Panjim (Panaji)

1er jour : Panjim (Panaji)
Link

Trip #1: Mysore - Ooty - Coonoor

12/02/2010 - 14/02/2010 (map/plan)
--

View Indian experience in a larger map

Our first weekend trip was a success! We had a wonderful time and got a lot of nice pictures!

Day 1: Bangalore - Mysore

We decided to get an early start to the day to avoid the holiday traffic and headed out at 8:30. Our first stop was in a place that is famous for it's wooden toys, We stopped in a handicraft store and saw all the handmade wooden crafts: rocking horses, bowls and cutlery and many, many other wooden objects. We arrived in Mysore early afternoon and had a lunch of their famous dosas which are delicious. We then visited the famous Mysore Palace and spent a large portion of the afternoon there - the place is huge! What a beautiful palace, check out the link for some history. Afterwards we went to find a hotel and relax a bit. Our evening started off with a nice surprise - normally the palace is only lit up on Sunday nights but we were lucky enough to be there on a holiday and see the palace all it up, what an incredible sight! We learnt that for a half an hour of lights the electricity bill is over 8000 rupees ($180 Canadian!!) A beautiful sight. Bedtime included a couple of cockroach scares, but they were only in the bathroom and Jenny managed to get over her fear (after a couple of minutes of freaking out of course) and get some sleep.

Day 2: Mysore - Ooty (Udhagamandalam)

We drove through the Bandipur National Park and spotted a few elephants, some peacocks and some deer. The drive from Mysore to Ooty was beautiful with a lot of greenery and as we started the climb up to Ooty, we went through a section of highway that had 36 "hairpin bends" which were quite entertaining! When we finally reached Ooty we got out of the car and noticed that the air was distinctly cooler than what we were used to. Our driver assured Jenny that this meant the cockroaches would not make their nightly appearnace, much to her relief! We explored the city with all it's many shops and got a fair amount of their famous handmade chocolate, which we hope will last us some time, but we're not making any promises. We made a detour to go to the Ooty lake and decided to take out a paddle boat which turned out to be more work that we thought, but a nice little ride. We also visited a nice botanical garden where many people asked to take pictures with us (we're famous here!) and went to a viewpoint called Dodda Betta which is the highest point near Ooty. Excellent views of the many tea fields that surround Ooty. We spent the evening with our driver, and even managed to get him to come out with us to the one place we could have a beer in Ooty which turned out to also be a club, much to Jenny's delight and Steph's dismay. Yes, some dancing was done, I'll let you guess who did that! Closing time at 11pm then the race to find dinner before everything closed. We managed to find one place that was open and then decided to head to bed as we had a train to catch the next morning!

Day 3: Ooty - Coonoor - Bangalore

We took the Nilgiri Blue Mountain Railway from Ooty to Coonoor for a nice little trip of 19km (1 hour). Had some more great views of the tea fields on the charming little "toy train" and enjoyed ourselves thouroughly. Once in Coonoor we wanted to visit a tea factory, as the Blue Mountain area is very famous for it's tea even supplying such companies as Lipton and Red Label with tea, but to our dismay the factory was closed on Sundays. We bought some nice tea at the "factory outlet" anyway (masala tea, chocolate tea, ginger tea and green tea) and have yet to try it at home, but we have high hopes! We went to another viewpont, this time with a "guide" and he was less interested in explaining things to us and much more interested in making us pose in MANY different places and making us "stand like this, stand like that, put your hand in your pocket, put your hand on the shoulder, turn your head this way, that way, don't forget to smile!" - just like a professional! We ended up with many forced poses while we are dying of laughter! A memorable moment. Then the rest of the day was pretty much spent in the car heading back to the hustle and bustle of Bangalore. We arrived around 10:30 pm and were quite ready to head for bed!

All in all we had a great weekend away from the city and are looking forward to our next trip with Jenny's aunt next weekend - Goa! Stay tuned...

Notre premier voyage s'est super bien passe ! On a pleins de photos a partager...

1er jour: Bangalore - Mysore

3e jour : Ooty - Coonoor - Bangalore

On a achete plusieurs the directement importe d'usine (the parfum masala, chocolat, gingembre et du the vert).

05/02/2010
--

After a long wait and just a tiny bit of stress, we had our housewarming party. It was a fabulous evening filled with good friends, good food and good fun. There was also some music and dancing on the menu and, believe it or not, Steph even danced and we have the videos to prove it!

We had about 20 people over and Jenny decided that it was too much to have a sit-down dinner so the menu consisted of party finger-foods : samosas, pani puri, veggies and dip, some rice salad and other snacks. People seemed to enjoy the food, except the raw veggies which appartenly people do not eat here. But the important thing is that we're sharing new experiences, right? For us as well as everyone else! Steph's colleagues were nice enough to present the both of us with some very nice gifts; our very own Indian clothing! As you can see in the pictures, we didn't waste any time in trying them on! A fair amount of alcohol was consumed as well, and we had a few people who were hurting by the end of the party, definately not going to mention any names! Everyone seemed to have a good time and we sure enjoyed ourselves with our first, and hopefully not last, big party at our place!

We also made a very important purchase today, our very own Carrom board! We already have one in France and decided that we needed one here as well. We have already played many times and we're looking forward to having many carrom evenings with friends! For those of you who know this game, you know how fun it is!
We have posted lots of fun pics from the party.
Check back soon for more fun updates!!

--

New Apartment / Nouvel appartement

30/01/10
--

So - after 3 long weeks in a hotel - we are FINALLY in our very own apartment! It's a gorgeous 3 bedroom, two-storey place with all the furnishings we could ever want. We even have our very own rooftop terrace! We are very happy to finally be out of the hotel and even happier that our place is so wonderful.

A little background on how it all happened:
We visited two batches of apartments on two seperate Saturdays, all of them gorgeous of course. We picked out our favorite one and it went to the company for approval (because lodgings are included in Steph's contract). Then we waited. And waited. And waited. Then the crushing news came back that it was waaaaaaaay over budget. So we had to then pick a second favorite, in the same apartment complex, which we liked almost as much as the first one. We were assured that this one was definately within the budget. Which it was NOT. By this point, we were getting kind of frustrated that we had wasted all this time looking at places that we could NOT have, making sure that any place we could have would be a big disappointment after seeing all the gorgeous ones. So that is when Steph decided to have a meeting with some people from his company to figure out exactly what we were supposed to do and by when we could expect to get a place. This meeting turned out better than either of us could have hoped for. After much debate and discussion over the rising prices in Bangalore Steph and his company came to the agreement that they (the company) would pay a certain amount for our place and we would have to chip in the rest. We were thrilled. They told us we could have our second choice for a somewhat decent price. This all happened on Friday night and we were told we could move in on Saturday, anytime after 1:30 pm, when they would call us. So we ended up getting a call at 2:20 (Indian Stretchable Time at it's best) and we were on our way to our new place. Then, to our great surprise, we were showed into the apartment that we had picked as our FIRST CHOICE!!! So, the wait and headaches were all worth it because in the end, we ended up getting everything that we wanted (at a higher price of course!).

So, we have posted some pictures and a nice video of our new place and now we are just waiting for your comments - let us know what you think! Also, if anyone wants to come visit, you need to start letting us know, these rooms are going t0 fill up fast! `Check back soon for more updates...

Puis, on a attendu. Puis, attendu. Puis, attendu. On était ravi.

On attend vos commentaires !

Lalbagh Park

24/01/2010
--
Just a few words about this botanical park we visited last Sunday: Lalbagh Botanical Garden (map).
It has a famous glass house which hosts a yearly flower show. We visited this park last Sunday during and we were fortunate enough to catch this year's flower show. There was a large variety of flora and nice sculptures made out of flowers. There were also a lot of visitors... even though we went there in the early morning.
Besides the glass house, the park also has a lake and an aquarium, but we'll keep those for later on, when you guys (any takers?) will come to visit us, we'll go together.

Check out our pictures below...

Letdown day / Journee decevante

22/01/2010
--

Well hello to all our faithful readers, a few things to fill you in on. Jenny ate meat for the first time since her arrival in India yesterday. Not that she missed it, which she didn't, just that she wanted to taste Steph's choice of dish. It was confirmed, she still doesn't miss meat!

Second update: we had a kind of negative experience with our apartment hunting. We went out a few times with some real estate agents who work with Steph's company and they showed us about 5 or 6 apartments - all of which were gorgeous. We finally chose one on Wednesday, which was the best one on an all round scale - with all the amenities that we wanted, in the type of neighbourhood that we wanted and the apartment was perfect for us. Or so we thought. We were informed this afternoon that it was way over budget. These agents were supposed to be showing us things that were in the company's predetermined budget and they (purposefully?) showed us things that were well above that! So we have to start all over again! It was, without exaggertaing, an enormous letdown! So tomorrow is take 2 of our apartment search, though seeing the ones we cannot afford before the ones we can afford may turn out to be a tough experience. Sigh...

Third update: we also spent a large portion of our day at the Foreigner's Registration Office, which was also a kind of negative experience, though in the end we finally ended up getting what we needed. We arrived with hopes of making our visit as short as possible and ended up staying over 3 hours. Double sigh. Jenny has always complained about French administration and now she will have to shut up - she has found something worse. Or at least on the same level.

So to sum things up a bit, today was - for the most part - a big letdown. But we both are trying to pick up our spirits and not let this get in the way of having the best year of our lives. We'll just have to chalk it up to a rocky start, which would have been expected almost anywhere. So tomorrow we are hoping for a bit of a fresh start, with these experiences under our belt, we now know what to ask and for what we need to be on the lookout. So wish us luck tomorrow and check back soon for some more "fun" updates!
